How To Go Back To School Without Going Back To School
How To Go Back To School Without Going Back To School Starting inSeptember comes the melancholy feeling of losing summer while entering the busy season of family schedules, holidays, and looming long winters (for those in seasonal climates). With the perceived loss that comes with change, a newness emerges the chance to reset, renew, and relearn. The falling leaves can be taken as a sign of extra work and raking, or they can be seen as a time to departure over a new school year, of sorts. In an academic context, no matter how tragic the last term was, with friends lost, enemies gained, grades failed or awkward stages entered, a new term means a fresh start new notebooks with crisp bindings, sharpened pencils with fresh erasers, and a variety of other supplies that equip the student to face whatever lies ahead. The anxiety is tempered with optimism. Executives lose this annual paradigm shift One month just blends into another, and, aside from New Years Resolutions and corporate goal setting, they tend to carry on without much thought or reason to punctuate the various professional chapters. What if we treated fall like scholars do? What if we took the opportunity every year to do something new, to start something fresh, to challenge ourselves to learn something we dont know? What if we all, literally or metaphorically, went back to school?Business professionals can stay ahead of the learning curve by reading white papers, attending seminars, or even just participating in webinars. With the fast pace of technology and increasing demands of consumers, staying on pace in geschftlicher umgang can be exhausting and disheartening. As soon as we master a mobile device, the next model comes out just when we learn about programmatic advertising, another over-the-top system emerges and when we finally figure out how to search and optimize a website, Google changes the rules. Everyone wants to be the Amazon of a particular industry or just try not to be deemed a relic by Amazon. All of this growth, speed, and activity is like being on a constant treadmill but not seeing any results and not getting ahead. It is easy to feel overwhelmed. For the maturing professional, it is easy to feel mora outdated than a favorite Blackberry device. Fortunately, however, fall brings change, and change brings opportunity. How can business professionals avoid burnout? How can they stay fresh and renew a sense of focus? Ironically, Arianna Huffington, in her book Thrive admitted to hoping for a hospital stay just to get a break from her aggressive work schedule. Other overachievers have silently wished for similar breaks. However, smart professionals know better options exist like continuing education. Today many top universities offer accelerated programs in everything from customer experience and entrepreneurialism to digital marketing and global workforce development. They assemble top thinkers in a particular field and engage students in mini-MBA like sessions tha t can provide them with a new set of practical tools and insights. Students not only learn new things or reinforce and update prior learning, they also surface with a renewed sense of purpose and passion. After all, nothing is more humbling than being exposed to a world of new information and knowledge. These experiences always remind me that the more I learn, the more I realize how little I really know. For those with an unquenchable thirst for information and progress, going back to the proverbial school once a year can satiate some of those needs, and, in doing so, nourish and reset the mind. For those who may still think that an old dog cant learn new tricks (thats just what old lazy dogs say to get out of learning new tricks), here are a few ideas for re-entering the academic world.Make a reading list. Select professional and inspirational books that you have come across but havent gotten around to reading yet and read them. Alternate fiction/fun books with business books to sta y motivated.Subscribe to an audio book service like Audible. Make the best use of commuting or travel time by listening to lectures and nonfiction often read by the author him/herself.Watch TED videos on Youtube. These are inspiring short talks (18 minutes or less) by world leaders across industries. TED began as a conference where technology, entertainment, and design converged. Today it deckblatts almost all topics from science to business to global issues.Travel to a conference. It is nice to get out for a day and fit in a lunch-and-learn seminar, but it is more refreshing to get out of the sekretariat for a few days and line your schedule with lectures, dinners, and tradeshow encounters. Get in the habit of visiting booths of companies that you have never heard of. Find out what they do and learn more about their unique business niche. You will broaden your knowledge base along the way.Join an industry group and participate. Lining your resume with associations and councils that you pay to join looks good, but it is more rewarding to become an active member within those groups. Attend monthly panels discussions, dinners, and networking events throughout the year. Not only will you expand your professional base, but you will expose yourself to a new group of thought leaders on a continuing basis.Treat yourself or have your company sponsor you to take an executive continuing-education class or program. MIT Sloan has a great assortment of three-day programs across disciplines. If you dont want to take the time to attend in person, sign up for the web classes for a blend of independent and group learning.Look for lectures offered by local colleges/universities or even the community YMCA. Many academic institutions offer annual speaker series and have featured guests like Leon Panetta, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, and Ken Burns.Subscribe to key publications and business journals. Dedicate an hour a week to go through the email posts and article releases. The key is to sch edule that hour as you would a meeting or an appointment otherwise, your inbox will fill up and what would have been a nice break from your week will turn into a burden and another eintrag on your to-do list. Instead, block the time on your calendar, and leave your desk for another office or conference room to review the materials. Bring a beverage with you and enjoy the space.Dont always eat at your desk. A professional book titled Never Eat Alone proclaims the benefits of networking continuously. It can be challenging to schedule all meals with interesting, productive meetings outside of the office, but once a week should be achievable. Use this time to meet with old acquaintances and colleagues, or with agencies and sales organizations that are offering new insights or services in your industry. You will gain valuable one-on-one insights.Get out of the office. Make local trips to retailers, service providers, and entertainment complexes. Observe new marketing and business-transac tion methods. Look at what the competition is doing for sure, but spend more time outside of your industry to see what other smart businesses are doing with their brands and sales-lead generation brands like Tesla and other car companies, Whole Foods, and technology stores. Do this seasonally and build team field trips around the practice for staff building and other benefits. Many a brilliant mind has attested to the notion that a life well lived is a life that has never stopped learning. Whether watching the History Channel or Discovery, reading the Sunday Times cover to cover, or engaging in stimulating conversations about various topics from religion to politics, humans are meant to consume knowledge. Our entire growth and evolution as a species has depended on us acquiring more knowledge as we age in order to pass on wisdom to the next generation and start the cycle over again. Education not only furthers the greater good, but gives the individual a sense of renewal. Nail that interview
Nail that interview Nail that interviewPosted October 13, 2011, by Davide Crisante Job interviews come in all different forms but one fundamental goal remains the same you need to convince an interviewer that you are the one. To do this you need to understand what the interviewer is looking for and prove that you can deliver. The three things that will help you secure the job are preparation, presentation, and performance. Preparation Research the company Get as much information about the company, job and industry as you can. Dont just rely on a Google search or a quick skim of the organisations website though this is a good start To really impress, look for additional sources of information like business journals and newspapers. Find out who the companys major clients are, what the company does and the names of people in key positions like the CEO. Then make aya you mention some of this information at the interview. Contact the company and ask about the interview process, and find out who will be interviewing you. If the organisation is large, you can look for information about this part online. Knowing something about the person interviewing you can be a massive advantage on the day. Preparation Research yourself Speak with some old colleagues about your positive and negative traits while at work. What have you done to build on your strengths and overcome your weaknesses? Its vital to be clear about what you want, so work out your long-term career goals and how this job fits your plan. Make sure you know your resume well and be ready to prove your experience by having a few examples of work achievements up your sleeve. Preparation Research the questions A number of standard questions come up again and again in interviews so it is possible to plan what you will say if you are asked one of these. For example, its easy to plan in advance an answer to tell me about a time when you had to deal with a difficult person. Practise answering the questions at home. Tr eat it like a rehearsal and make sure you are confident to tell your story and to ad lib if something unexpected happens. Presentation Clothes It is better to be overdressed than underdressed and this often means wearing a suit. The easiest way to find out what is expected of you is to ring the receptionist and ask what the dress code is. Even if it is casual, you should still dress in smart business clothes. Keep accessories like jewellery to a minimum, make sure your is hair tidy and your shoes must be clean. Presentation Behaviour It is important to come across as enthusiastic, but let the interviewer set the tone. They might not shake your hand, but be ready in case they do. React to their mannerisms. If the interviewer has a soft tone, dont speak loudly back to them. If you tend to move your hands around a lot, try to keep them closer to your lap. And of course, never forget the golden rule. Turn that mobile phone off Presentation Develop rapport An interview is sometimes liken ed to a date which is why they can be so intimidating The best way to make a good impression is by staying calm and relaxed. Be yourself and try to enjoy the experience. Eye contact and a smile are essential. Actively listen to everything the interviewer says and incorporate his or her own words into your answers. Make sure you dont send off negative signals by crossing your arms or by looking around the room instead of at the interviewer. Performance Youre the star Youve prepared, youre confident and youre looking terrific. Now its showtime Or rather, audition time Its time to sell yourself and convince your interviewer that you are the one and only. And dont forget to be on time (in fact, make sure you are there a little early). Stay cool, calm and focused. Deep breathing and relaxation exercises can help relax your muscles. Stand tall as you walk in and shake hands. Eye contact is good but should not be continuous -thats unnatural and a little scary Performance Show and tell Sho w what you know and what you can do. Listen carefully, and respond. Ask questions of your own at the end and thank the person for their time with another handshake. Follow up via email or snail mail to say thank you for the interview and reiterate your interest in the position. Then cross your fingers and hope for the best. Medical Devices Journal Accepting Papers for Special Issue
Medical Devices Journal Accepting Papers for Special Issue Medical Devices Journal Accepting Papers for Special Issue Medical Devices Journal Accepting Papers for Special IssueMay 20, 2016 The editorial board for the ASME Journal of Medical Devices is currently accepting papers for a special issue of the journal, which is scheduled to be published this November. The deadline to submit a paper for the special journal issue, which will cover topics related to computer modeling for cardiovascular device development and safety assessment, is June 30.Cardiovascular devices must typically interact with a complex physiologic environment that can severely challenge device performance and longevity. These challenges include blood damage such as hemolysis and thrombosis changing contact conditions during each heartbeat high-cycle fatigue-to-fracture and the need to accommodate the highly variable geometric, material, and hemodynamic environment encountered across the target population. The c ardiovascular device industry increasingly relies on computer modeling as a controlled and repeatable methodology for assessing unterstellung device plan-related factors. In addition, clinicians are evaluating computer modeling as a pre-interventional planning tool that can confirm the need for treatment and optimize treatment outcomes. The special issue of the Journal of Medical Devices will feature original research that highlights the use of computer models in all stages of cardiovascular device development and assessment. Potential topics for journal papers include, but are not limited to, cardiovascular biomechanics in health and disease, including soft tissue modeling the impact of image acquisition and/or segmentation on model uncertainty shape variability of anatomic structures in the population physiological responses to an intervention device-tissue interactions assessing and optimizing device performance regulatory or non-regulatory device safety assessment and surgical p rocedure planning and improving diagnostics for clinical decision-making. Contributions are expected to employ one or more of a wide range of approaches, including computational fluid dynamics, finite element analysis, high- and low-frequency electromagnetics, reduced-order and lumped parameter approaches, multi-scale analysis, anatomic models, and statistical shape analysis. Submitted papers should also tie the work described to the design of a medical device, either by incorporating a simulated device as an example or by describing how the computational tool would be used in the design of a specific medical device.Papers for the special issue should be submitted to the ASME Journal paper submission website no later than June 30 by visiting http//journaltool.asme.org and choosing Medical Devices. Choose Your Career Before You Pick a College Major
Choose Your Career Before You Pick a College MajorChoose Your Career Before You Pick a College MajorChoose Your Career Before You Pick a College Major3 Catastrophic Errors and 3 Ways to Avoid ThemIt certainly is ironic Service men and women returning to civilian life often choose the life of the mind full-time college sponsored by the GI Bill, that is without giving much thought to which major will bring them career and financial success. Too often, when I ask student veterans what they want to do with the college degree theyre working so hard for, they respond, I have no idea. The 2010s labor market will not be forgiving to the millions of young people including hundreds of thousands of veterans who choose a college major without having chosen a career with the help of a professional advisor. About 44 percent of recent college graduates were underemployed in 2012, up from 38 percent in 2007, according to Current Issues in Economics and Finance, a publication of the Federal Reserv e Bank of New York. In addition, some 19 percent of underemployed recent college graduates were working only part-time in 2012.And for veterans whose military service has delayed their post-secondary education even as many start their own families its especially risky to embark on college without a career plan.Of course no one should expect returning vets to figure out by themselves which college major will qualify them for a rewarding career. Yet simply by seeking a career counselors help early in their college experience, returning veterans can avoid the devastating disappointment of starting over or settling for less. Here are tales of two returning veterans and their post-separation journeys one a story of setbacks, the other an exemplar of a successful transition to a very promising career with the federal government. Not Every Degree Will Get You Where You To The Career You WantIn the Army from 2006 to 2011, Sergeant Mariano Torres served as a helicopter technician in South K orea and as a squad leader in Fort Hood, Texas, and in Afghanistan. During his training and decorated tours of duty, Torres acquired many skills that are potentially transferrable to a civilian career, from maintaining Army aircraft and helping save lives in an air ambulance company, to training soldiers and performing complex administrative tasks.Regardless of his diverse accomplishments in uniform, when Torres separated from the Army, he wanted his life and career to take a new direction. He took a web design course with an online college, but wasnt convinced it would make a good career. Then I wanted to be an entrepreneur and either start my own business or invest in a franchise, says Torres, but he wasnt sure how college could prepare him for that.I ended up taking a philosophy course and pursuing that major, says Torres, because he enjoyed the intellectual endeavor and believed that a bachelors degree would qualify him for a career as a philosopher of education. He again distin guished himself, completing that philosophy degree with a GPA of 3.9.But when Torres finally received sound career advice from a college counselor, it contained a very difficult truth To become a philosopher, you need to earn a doctorate degree an investment of time and money that he wasnt in a position to make. If Torres had spoken with a college career services advisor much earlier in his higher education, they might have suggested a bachelors degree program that would lead to a well-paying job much sooner ideally a professional occupation that would align with both his military experience and his desire for change. At The Resume Place, weve worked with Torres to translate his military service and his major in philosophy into a practical set of administrative skills, featuring his studies of, and experience in, computers, communications, research and databases. But college coursework in logistics and transportation could have brought Torres much brighter prospects in todays job m arket.Lessons Learned from Mariano Torres Think twice before setting aside all the training and experience you gained in military service Research career paths extensively before you elect a college major Make sure your career counselor is working for you, not just your collegeKnow How To Use Experience and Degree To Get What You WantSergeant Jeremy Denton, who served in the Marine Corps from 2004 to 2008 including two tours of duty in Iraq, graduated cum laude from the University of Baltimore with a bachelors degree in government and public policy in 2010. His coursework for that degree ranged from constitutional law to ethics to comparative government.Soon after he completed college, Denton landed a federal civilian job as an intelligence analyst with the Maryland National Guard. With sound advice, he found a career that combines his military experience ranging from database administration to electronic warfare to leadership skills he picked up as a helicopter crew chief with hi s academic studies of how governments make and implement policy.Even though he chose a liberal arts major over a classical pre-professional concentration such as accounting or law, Denton has succeeded by purposefully integrating his military training and experience with his college course of study.Lessons Learned from Jeremy Denton Get career advice as early as possible in your college career Integrate your military experience with your college studies Think creatively about which types of employers will value your unique resume most highly On Sale NowJobseekers Guide 7th Edition

This prolonged state of stress is terrible for your health. Besides increasing your risk of heart disease, depression, and obesity, stress decreases your cognitive performance. We need to establish boundaries between our personal and professional lives. When we dont, our work, our health, and our personal lives suffer.Responding to emails during off-work hours isnt the only area in which you need to set boundaries. You need to make the critical distinction between what belongs to your employer and what belongs to you and you only. The items that follow are yours. If you dont set boundaries around them and learn to say no to your boss, youre giving away something with immeasurable value.1. Your healthIts difficult to know when to set boundaries around your health at work because the decline is so gradual. Allowing stress to build up, losing sleep, and sitting all day without exercising all add up. Before you know it, youre rubbing your aching back with one hand and your zombie-like eyes with the other, and youre looking down at your newly-acquired belly. The key here is to not let things sneak up on you, and the way you do that is by keeping a consistent routine. Think about what you need to do to keep yourself healthy (taking walks during lunch, not working weekends, taking your vacations as scheduled, etc.), make a plan, and stick to it no matter what. If you dont, youre allowing your work to overstep its bounds.2. Your familyIts easy to let your family suffer for your work. Many of us do this because we see our jobs as a means of maintaining our families. We have thoughts such as I need to make more money so that my kids can go to college debt-free. Though these thoughts are well-intentioned, they can burden your family with the biggest debt of a ll- a lack of quality time with you. When youre on your deathbed, you wont remember how much money you made for your spouse and kids. Youll remember the memories you created with them.3. Your sanityWhile we all have our own levels of sanity to begin with, you dont owe a shred of it to your employer. You know youve allowed this to go too far when you reflect on whats important to you and work is all that (or most of what) comes to mind.
